THE under-15 Northern side, which comprises North Coast and Hunter players, lost only one game in the the NSW Combined High Schools rugby league selection trials at Lyle Peacock Field, Toronto, last week.

They went down to the President's XI team.

The trials were held at the venue for the 27th straight year and took three days to complete.

The under 18s did not fare as well, winning only once, against Southern.

Mervyn Tighe and Tyrone Roberts, from Hunter Sports High, were named in the NSW CHS under-15 team to compete in a Test match against Queensland on their way to the national championships in Perth at the end of June, but no Hunter player made the under-18 state side.

? The Hunter Secondary boys soccer team were unlucky to be beaten in the final of the NSW CHS titles in Albury last week.

They finished second in their pool before meeting Sydney South West in a semi-final, which went to a penalty shoot-out after the scores were locked 0-0.

Hunter won 12-11 on penalties to progress to the final.

In the decider, Hunter met Sydney East, who they had drawn with in the preliminary rounds.

The scores were again locked 0-0 at full-time before Sydney East won with a goal in the closing minutes of extra time.

Hunter Sports High's Ben McNamara and Blake Glennie won selection in the NSW CHS first team, while Joshua Birch, from Glendale, made the second side.

? The Hunter Primary and Secondary Cross Country Championships will be held on Friday at Maitland's Walka Water Works.
